The ICAO English Language Proficiency Test, also known as an ICAO ELP test or aviation English exam, assesses your ability to communicate clearly in an aviation setting. It focuses on how you understand, respond and express yourself in real situations, rather than on memorised answers.
What does the test assess?
Your English is assessed across six ICAO criteria:

Pronunciation: how clearly you speak and how easily others can understand you.

Structure: how effectively you use grammar and sentence patterns.

Vocabulary: whether you have the words to communicate and explain your meaning.

Fluency: how naturally and consistently you speak.

Comprehension: how well you understand what you hear.

Interactions: how appropriately you respond and keep a conversation going.
ICAO English proficiency levels
Level 4 – Operational
Reassessment every 4 years.
Level 5 – Extended
Reassessment every 6 years.
Level 6 – Expert
No periodic reassessment required.
Your overall ICAO level is determined by your lowest score across the six assessment criteria.
